To me, vertical squeeze is a must to attain a good quality picture from DVD. I have no difficulty distinguishing the quality of picture with and without vertical squeeze.
For those who can't, this may help
1. Degradation is easier to detect. Sometimes, I have difficulties in catching the improvement

when I change a free-in-the-box cable to CANARE component video cable. However, it's easier for me to feel the picture is worse and I couldn't stand it when I switch back to free cable.
2. Calibration. I find that if you use factory preset, it's difficult to tell the difference, ie I could hardly tell the improvement of S-video vs. 'composite' cable when I left a Sony TV at Dynamic picture mode. The closer you adjust your TV to AVIA or (D)VE guideline, the easier you see the difference.
3. Still picture is easier to see the difference. Lots of DVD player these days left the TV screen with some kind of its company logo. You should be able to see the effect of the squeeze very easily than watching moving picture

the real movies, cartoon or concert. However, you may need to calibrate the picture to see the difference better.
If you still cannot distinguish after trying the above, you're in luck as you can pay less and have the same satisfaction with the picture. Plus, there is no troublesome guessing whether you need to activatie the vertical squeeze, particularly for disc with little info

pirated DVD.
