I suggest you invest in a calibration disc

The reason is that each room is different in term of lighting and ambient light. Also, you have different associated equipment, be it different kind of cable box, DVD player, interconnect cable between all these equipment, etc. It's less likely you have a good one by asking others how they adjust their set as their room are definitely not the same as yours.
If you don't want to invest at all, one of the thing that helps improve picture quality is to reduce the sharpness to 0 (zero) while lower all other setting including contrast, brightness (these two function need to be adjusted together as it interacts with each other). This will only "partially" help and one of the way out if you don't want to invest in DVE krub. It won't be as good as you use DVE but it's better than not doing it krub.
