First of all: Thank you KAIBOER for finally making us see a nice simple high end looking NMT. Amazing work done on build quality; but you could have made it a little thinner so it would not be so heavy while shipping; otherwise it's very strong and good build. Very happy here.
Retail packing: Great work once again; box looks nice, opening it is very easy and unit is well packaged inside.
Accessories:
HDMI Cable: Nice high quality cable; better than other brand HDMI free cables - but why 1.5 M why not 2 Meter; you know my shelf is big and it's not easy to install with such a short cable; but anyway great quality.
Powerbrick looks cheap and probably is; the indicator light should have been blue to match the light on the unit; you should make something nicer here. Go have a look at apple website for some ideas; give me something I want to put on the shelf that I can show off with; not having to hide it behind the unit.
Powercable - why why why 0.5M ? What were you thinking; do you know it did not reach my powersocket; and I had to borrow the "2nd cable" from another player (yea, some players actually give two AC cables) to get the unit to turn on.
USB Cable - I don't think I am ever going to need this; but a blue cable looks nice otherwise; again it's a bit too short but it'll do.
Remote - Nice ! Backlight makes me drool...good work here; but I don't feel like hearing a mouse click everytime I press a button; reminds me of my computer; so do something about it. Try the Oppo remotes; they have almost no noise and are very sturdy buttons - but whatever you do DO NOT lose the backlight.
Anyway just wondering why is it red ? You guys have some RGB scheme going here ? Red light remote / Green light powerbrick / Blue light nmt ?!? Come on, give us 1 color; blue or white will be nice. Green is lame and ancient; red looks like it's .
The unit it self if built well ; no flaws here; shiny brushed aluminum; USB slot on side; HDD slot on side; no VFD; a tiny light to indicat power. Minimalistic and cool ! Love it . Black is good - looks perfect with the rest of my equipment.
So I connected everything now. My AVR shows K200 (I set it) - DolbyTrue HD / Multi CH PCM / DTS / Dolby Digital all works. HDMI autosyncs @ 1080p/24 - perfect; means your cable is good .
I played with some NMT (msp) features on the unit : youtube / flickr / news etc. Very happy with just this much. Youtube on a TV! like a dream come true for me; I don't watch much TV mostly movies/youtube/concerts - so this is great. I was playing with it for so long; I forgot this unit can view movies too.
First test : Full Rip Blueray Concert Multi-ch PCM : Andrea Bocelli
Picture : No problems, no sew (played from HDD).
Sound: Too soft ; had to crank up the volume on my avr. a bit - but no big deal.
Pic/Sound loses sync for a couple seconds when rew/fwd.
Can see some pic blocks after seeking (time).
Second test: Full Rip Blueray Concert Dolby TrueHD : Celine Dion
All same as above
Third: LOTR DTS Movie.
Works flawlessly - very happy with picture quality.
Overall review for picture quality: The SMP8635 does it's job very well when viewing MKV movies; pictures can easily match from other HD players in the market, with fullrip bluerays it's not yet perfect but I'd give it a 9/10.
NMT Interface ; default is slick, easy to use, and very user friendly . I didn't even need to go online to check what it does.
Audio: Needs some work as I mentioned above (too soft); i fear audio loss quality here; but not sure yet - need more tests. I'd give it a 7/10 for now.
Operating Noise: slight fan noise there; but walking away 1 m from the unit; i can't hear it any more so that's good . I can hear the HDD working when choosing movies; or is it just vibration I am not sure . But when movies are playing there is no noise. You need some vibration dampers; or find a way to silence the HDD completely; it can get irritating in a quiet room.
I haven't tested streaming from PC/NAS and Bittorrent functions; I will send those in later.
Anyway photos are here; they are pretty much self explanatory.
