I think being an audiophile means:1. You love music first and foremost. It's more valuable to an audiophile to hear good music on a mediocre system than crappy music on a stellar system.
2. You don't mind spending a little more for sound quality IF it fits your budget. I think people who always look for the cheapest route may miss some good sound.
3. You don't believe that the highest priced gear is always the best sounding. There may be a correlation but there have always been (in my 24+ years in audio) great values
the Benchmark DACs, Paradigm speakers, etc.
4. You spend more time listening to music than you do jawboning about the stereo system.
5. You recognize that there are people and labels who do produce better sounding product whether its Chesky or Groove Note at original recordings or Steve Hoffman and others in the mastering room. You are willing to pay a little more for the extra care and great sonics.
6. You recognize that all formats have limitations but you have a plan to make the best of what's available or go back to good ole analog to fit your musical tastes.
7. You recognize that snobbish behavior has turned many people away from the world of high end audio even as the price of admission has dropped considerably. Many high end brands make great entry product such as the Cardas and Kimber cables. You seek to make people aware of the possibilities of value gear instead of taking the easy road to the Bose store or the local big box retailer.
8. You enjoy visiting friend's houses to listen to their stereo because you recognize that hearing more equipment in more environments expands what you know about audio and further defines what sounds right.

Mr.Grant once denied he was an audiophile.
