nkt cables a/s is one of the leading manufacturers of halogen-free cables.
Over the latest years the increased awareness of environmental issues has had a noticeable impact on the choice of material within cable manufacturing.
nkt cables has been the pioneers in this area, and launched as the first company in the world, PVC-cables without lead and chloride paraffins as early as in 1993.
After 10 years of development (and sales of some types) the 1st generation of PVC- and halogen-free cables was introduced to the market in 1995.
The PVC- and halogen-free cable programme from nkt cables is called NOPOVIC® (No polyvinyl chloride).
Why should we use PVC- and halogen-free cables?
PVC- and halogen-free cables provide obvious advantages, as far as safety and environment are concerned.
Safety
During a fire PVC cables develop a thick black hydrochloric acid-containing smoke, resulting in considerably reduced visibility. PVC- and halogen-free cables only emit a faint smoke and thus provides better visibility and thereby better escape and rescue conditions.
Together the hydrochloric acid-containing and corrosive vapours from the PVC cables emerging in a fire situation, damage EDP equipment etc. This can be avoided by using PVC- and halogen-free cables.
Environment
The cables are manufactured without using PVC and phthalate, which products are suspected of being unhealthy to humans and animals.
Worn-out and scrapped PVC- and halogen-free cables do not cause the same problems as PVC when disposed of. When the metallic parts have been removed, the NOPOVIC®-plastic can be recycled or if recycling is inappropriate be disposed of in a waste incineration plant without problems.
