This is quite a good film but I still think it is overrated. There are some notable plotholes (such as how did they learn to speak English so well). Some scene really reminded me of his (the director) earlier film 'Trainspotting'. I did 
that the play with the phrase in the beginning and in the end though.
I did spent 3 years in India for my hi-school and I can guarantee you that in some place it is as bad (if not worse) as in the movie, but on the other side, it is a very beautiful and diversed country.
Bottom line I still think people should watch it.
Another thing is I'm not sure about the others but Dev Patel is British citizen krub.
Sorry for my blunt comment but I think the American really love something for a change.
This is a great review.My reasons,from the one who was in india's experiences and there were many holes in entire the story exactly.For eamples,Why did the 2 brothers can speak Enlish and Hindi fluently without any education? May be ,the director want the American or many audiences to understand without subtitles The Passion of The Christ.Also,Why did the thug,older brother suddendly changed his mind to let Latika escaped and then he died?Was this film overrated? Of course,may be the American want the whole new way of the movie as Couching Tiger,Hidden Dragon was the sucess one before.I love the way you review and it was not a blunt review,please be back for the next movie.Well,so many spoiler in here. American need change for everthing even the movie.

When has 'Who wants to be a millionaire?' (อ้อ รวมถึงเกมเศรษฐีด้วยครับ) ever been live broadcasted?
Why did the show host always say that if Jamal got the answer wrong, he would get nothing? I don't really remember this correctly but I think the contestants always get some money from the show, aren't they?
There is some scene I don't recall exactly, the lead actor (Dev) shouted out in British accent.
But hey, afterall, there are always plotholes in every movie but do they make the movie bad, of course not in this case. It's a classic Mumbai Fairytale as you may call it. It makes your heart filled with happiness at the end. (I'm always a fan of Happy Endings krub.)
BTW, I really liked the pharse 'It's written' as at the beginning of the movie I picked that answer too (written by the show) and surprised to find out that it was somewhat the right answer but however 'by god' I suppose.
