Get a roll of plastic mat from Zellers if you in Canada. It is a anti-slip mat, cut whole bunch of around 2.5 inches diameter size little mat with a center hole, stack 3 to 4 pcs, use them to replace the center ring. You may experience the different number of the mats depends on the thickness of your vinyl. it provides MUCH better grip and because they are soft plastic and compress-able, so when you tighten the clamp, the record will end up flatten onto the platter. I found the imagine more stable this way.
I used the stainless steel washer because that's all my local hardware store had. Turns out it worked pretty well in improving the response with certain LPs.
I am using the original 2 piece clamp on my 19IV still with the rubber washer. But I swapped out the black plastic knob for a metal wing nut last week and I have been really enjoying the results.

Some people experiment, using Delrin for example. Teres uses a .1 inch thick Delrin washer. HW has written that the best sounding one he ever heard was made of lead.

I've had very good results adding a washer under the gromets and using wingnuts. The washer eliminates the problem of twisting the springs when adjusting the suspension on an AR; maybe also on the Lin .......

Do NOT place the washer underneath the platter. The washer is to go underneath the record, so when clamped down, the outside of the record is pushed against the platter/mat. .......62: Re: The little washer ... (7.76)

Several TT use a similar system, Oracle, Michell, et.al. As others have said make sure the clamp is snug,

the oracle, were designed with a clamp and washer in mind. The washer pushes the mat up and the clamp creates a bell curve to flatten out the warp. This is a good sounding and sensibl .......
